I have just finished reading some of the espresso coffee forums and have come away feeling a little ‘put-upon’. In a discussion about the Breville espresso machine bes900xl I was reading comments that Breville doesn’t have a track record with this machine, it ‘only’ has a stainless steel boiler not copper, and some of the parts are just doomed to failure. In fact these comments were made just after the release of the product! Are these people the ‘espresso snobs’ I keep reading about?
Testing The Machine
Breville obviously took the construction of this new espresso machine very seriously. So seriously they simulated brewing 15,000 cups using several machines, which tested out the main components. If they encountered a problem they fixed it and started again.
Breville BES900xl Ingenuity
This Breville espresso machine has a stylish brushed steel finish that would blend in with all the fridges, ovens and dishwashers out there. Like them it will need a wipe to get rid of the fingerprints! An aluminum top gives lots of room for cups. And, I love that it can convert from rubber gripper feet to small wheels that lets you move it easily around the counter. Now some designer was really thinking with that unique innovation.
Another unique inclusion is that the BES900xl won’t stop your shot mid-pour. When the reservoir is low it’ll continue making the shot until one of two things happens a) the auto shot button reaches its preprogrammed volume, or B) you hit the manual brew button to end the shot. What is not to like about this feature? Try to find it on some of the most expensive espresso makers.
And what about the LED lighting diode that lets you accurately determine the water level. This certainly helps prevent over-filling. And even then the designers have kept us bleary eyed types in mind. They built in a slot so that any overfill automatically ends in the drip tray! Kudos!
Meet One of the Engineers of the Breville Espresso Machine bes900xl
I found a short video in which one of the engineers is interviewed and it is interesting to note who their target market is.
SCAA 2011: Hands On with Breville\’s BES900 Espresso Machine
It appears to me that Breville set out to challenge the mid-range $1000.-$1500. espresso market . They obviously have read the coffee forums, listened to customers, learned from previous production models and consulted with espresso coffee gurus. In my mind they have done a darn good job with the Breville BES900xl!
